Points on the board gives everybody confidence and after an upsy downsy start to the season this is what we needed. Will Vaughan returned to start in nets and with his presence that gave us 4 starters who had all joined the club as u18’s a few years ago.
The game started off fairly even – a bonus for Broughton as a new group of lads started to sort out who should be doing what and with Crossthwaite up front looking lively and Monks and Murch at the back looking experienced we started to click. Micklethwaite was key to the change. Tannock and Cummins did the hard graft in midfield and that left Ryan the space to float and create chances.
Crossthwaite went close on a number of occasions – hitting the bar with one header and narrowly missing with another and Tannock and Cummins also went close. Rob Pom, raiding down the left also hit the bar, “It was a shot” he claimed - but we know different. He was to be equally unlucky in the 2nd half with a similar effort. So, happy at half time but without anything to show for our efforts. The 2nd half was similar. Hayhurst looked at home at right back, Cobban started to find his feet and influence the game and now Dan Edwards began to create chances. With 20 mins to go we got
the breakthrough. Hudson harried a defender and having stolen the ball broke into the box and gave the keeper the “eyes”
for once it wasn’t due to alcohol and the keeper was deceived and beaten at the front post. By now
we were totally on top and 5 minutes later Edwards created space for
Daley-Ward and he finished perfectly to seal the points. db

GUILDHALL CUP Round 1 It’s a while since I have felt motivated to report- largely because results haven’t been great. In recent weeks however a football team has started to emerge from the random assortment of players that have turned out each week. A regular team is still a distant hope, but now we generally have a decent turnout each week. A mix of non football activities plus injuries this week meant that a number of reserve team players got call ups for a potentially difficult cup tie in Southport
We started well however with Murch in particular impressing in a midfield three. Newly returned Carl Duffy game us a focal point up front and for 30 minutes we matched Herald pass for pass and indeed chance for chance. Will Vaughan in nets made a couple of outstanding saves, but at the other end Edwards and Cobban also went close. Eventually a route 1 pass bisected our defence and a clinical finish saw us behind at the break.
The second half was better. Herald continued to threaten with lightening fast breaks, but equally we could have been level. In the end though a casual pass out of defence was seized upon and despite a finger tip save, the shot had enough power to put Herald 2 goals up. It wasn’t all finished though and Edwards in particular started to run rings round the defence down the right and in one such break Duffy released Edwards to round his marker and take the ball to the bye line and Vohra
got on the end of the cross and was able to force the ball home. With the lure of a penalty shoot out looming,
we finished the game well on top. A series of last minute corners and goal mouth scrambles injected some last minute panic into the Herald defence, but it held out and once again we had gone close but not quite made it.

Having played really well in the last 4 fixtures without any reward to show it was something of a relief to finally be on the right side of a close scoreline.
It started terribly having lost Ryan and Vaughan to injury late in the day. As usual Monks was prepared to step up to the plate and take the keepers gloves. We have 5 alleged keeper in the club – and none were available today. Then Micklethwaite and Hudson arrived late to the game meaning that the manager had to start the game – not what anybody wanted.
It was no surprise that we went behind after only 5 mins - stand in keeper Monks spilling a nasty swirling shot and a Springfield forward followed it up. It was soon 2-0 when our makeshift defensive line up was breached again.
Things improved when Hudson arrived and replaced the manager. His extra energy made a difference and we got a goal back when
Lowe ran onto a pin point through ball from Tannock to finish well. Soon it was 2-2 , this time
Crossthwaite seized on a loose chance. It looked good at that point but then our composure fell apart and we ended the half 4-2 down. It would have been easy to give up but wholesale positional changes by management plus the introduction of Micklethwaite made major difference. We won the half 3-0 and showed a return to decent football after the dross of the first half.
Hard running by Crossthwaite , Lowe and Eccles closed down spaces and this allowed Micklethwaite and Cummins to dominate midfield and play accurate passes for forwards to run onto.
Lewis Tannock started the fight back with a cool finish and
Crossthwaite did the rest. Defensively Duffy, Horn, Iddon and Newby looked sound and relatively untroubled and we were able to take a good win back to the pub. db

To quote the football chant – you only sing when your winning - it would be fair to say that I only write when we are winning. In my defence, this hasn’t happened too often this year and the writing juices have been similarly scarce. Last week we had 14 players missing – 14 ! – yet we still had a team plus subs and only narrowly lost. It wasn’t much better this week, though this time we were reinforced by a good group of our original u18 team. 6 of the team were from this source and once we had sorted out who was doing what the group played a reasonable game
Umar Bux returned for his first game back in a couple of weeks and looked a threat from the start as he weaved in and out of tight situations. A couple of efforts went close but against the wind we struggled initially to find an cohesion.
Eventually the breakthrough came from the unlikely boot of Matt Newby - a 25 yard rasper to be exact- and it was to turn out to be very much his day.
Starting the second half with the wind we were confident, but within 2 minutes a sloppy defensive error led to an equaliser. This seemed to spur us on however, and whilst still well short of what we could have achieved, the pass and move game started to work. Kev Cummins was fouled just outside the box and
Umar Bux managed to bend the ball just beyond the keeper reach to restore our lead and
Newby produced 2 excellent headed finishes from corners to make the score better reflect the balance of play. db
