1st Team Fixtures + Results, Scorers and Match Reports (where submitted).

Sat. 6th May 2006

v

O.Boltonians (h)   2 - 3 (ht.1-1)

scorers : M.Jones, Bamba

Against high flying Old Boltonians we got away to a perfect start when after 3 mins M Jones latched onto a defensive mistake and opened the scoring. The teams were evenly matched and until their centre half managed to arrive late in the penalty area unmarked just before half time to equalise we were playing confidently. Five minutes into the second half the same player again converted from a set piece. Although we were still competing well we again lacked penetration up front. Then after 65 mins we scored through a well taken goal by Bamba. Five minutes later our hopes of finishing with a win were dashed as Old Boltonians got a third and although we threw men up to equalise we just couldn't get the goal we deserved.

v

Rochdale St. Clements (a)   0 - 1 (ht.0-1)

scorers : -

Again to Rochdale with the need to collect points if we were to remain in the Premier. The match was a closely contested affair with both sets of defences in control of the game. A great run down the right hand side followed by an excellent finish from a Rochdale player after 21 mins proved to be the only goal of the match. From this point both sides contested the game in the midfield with neither side mustering a serious threat on goal. Unfortunatly Bolton Lads won their atest game which means our time in the Premier has been short. Although over the season we have competed well with the best in the league the high level of injuries and our lack of goals have been our downfall.

v

Rochdale St. Clements (a)   0 - 2 (ht.0-1) LAL Cup SF

scorers : -

After the excellent display on Saturday and only one change the team travelled to Rochdale with high hopes of repeating the sucess. This was not to be as the team struggled to play our passing game with a lively ball on a hard ground. For the first half hour we competed well and had we been a little steadier in front of goal would have scored at least twice. Then on the half hour the left hand side of the our defence failed to stop an advancing Rochdale player who then squared the ball for an easy tap in. This gave Rochdale a lift and Broughtons attacks became fewer. In the second half Rochdale took control of the game but a combination of sound defence and excellent goalkeeping kept Broughton in with a chance until the 88th min when a second Rochdale goal sealed the tie.
Sat. 22nd Apr. 2006

v

O.Mancunians (a)   2 - 0 (ht.1-0) LAL Cup QF

scorers : G.Halse, J.Mottley

On a day where we were struggling to put a full stregnth team out against a team who for some reason we struggle against. Even though before today thought they could still win the premier title. Our Management team were convinced we would beat them, and we did with a convincing 2-0 win. For the first 20 mins.it was all Mancs. with our makshift defence taking time to settle down, but with good goalkeeping and the ever dependable Andy Whillians in control, things settled down and with good battling all over the pitch, it wasnt long before Mottleys pace left the Mancs defence and keeper flat footed and he cooly slotted home after rounding the keeper. Soon after his pace again took him through and but for a nasty bobble it would have been two instead of only 1-0 at half time. Second half performance was even better. Yet again great battling and good football led to a tremendous 20 yrd left foot strike from Gav Hulse. The thing that was different today was every player did what was asked of them and unlike the Old Bolts game, we kept the two goal advantage because their manager inspired us with some derogatary comments. With 20 to go 2-0 up and a semi-final up for grabs we didn't need to entertain anyone and we`ve finally learnt how to win matches. Thanks to Lee Dargy for going on up front with manager Mick E. in the last 25 mins. and missing the open net from Mick's slide rule pass!!!!
Sat. 15th Apr. 2006

v

Chaddertonians (h)   1 - 3 (ht.0-3)

scorers : J.Mottley

A match that both teams needed points from to avoid the threat of relegation. Once again injuries and unavailability of players caused major changes to our line up and before we had time to settle Chadds took the lead after 8 mins and added two more in the first half hour. In the second half Broughton settled down and started to play as a team but could not get a goal early enough in the half to unsettle Chaddertonians. A goal eventually came in the 75 min from Mottley and although pushed hard and fought bravely we could not add to that score.
Mon. 10th Apr 2006

v

Prairie Utd (a)   1 - 1 (ht.0-0)

scorers : R.Broomfield

On a cold Monday evening we went to Prairie needing points if we are to avoid relegation. We played well in difficult conditions, when will the wind stop, and only poor finishing prevented us leading at half time. In the second half with a number of forced changes we quickly went one down through an unforced defensive error and for a brief spell had to defend well to prevent Prairie taking a larger lead. We then settled down and again failed to put away the chances that were made. Just when we thought all was lost Broomfield scored with his head and although we pressed hard for the last 10 mins we could not get a winner. It looks like relegation could be decided with the last match at this rate. The match was somewhat marred by a bad leg injury to Karl Harford who had to be taken to Burnley Hospital by ambulance.
Sat. 8th Apr. 2006

v

O.Boltonians (a)   2 - 3 (ht.2-2)

scorers : P.Harford, K.Harford

On a day that was more like a January day we arrived to face hailstorms, winds and a match that had been moved onto the 3rd/4ths pitch. We started well and mastered the conditions quicker than Old Boltonians and scored two goals from set pieces in the first 20 mins one each from the Harford twins. This gave us a false hope as Old Boltonians came back and by half time had drawn level. Both sides had opportunities in the second half and it was not until the 80th minute that the Old Boltonians pressure told and they went three two up. It was a fighting performance against a strong Old Boltonians side who are well up the league.
Sat. 1st Apr. 2006

v

Oldham Hulmeians (a)   4 - 0 (ht.1-0)

scorers : J.Greenwood, J.Mottley, P.Stephenson, M.Jones

This was a match we had to win to have any chance of avoiding relegation and we turned up at Oldham to see a pitch that was puddled and very heavy. We began lively and only the conditions prevented us going ahead in the early stages. After 20 mins Greenwood opened the scoring from a Jones cross. Although we ploughed on we could not increase the lead before half time. The good news was we were now playing to the "good" end (less mud and water) and a goal from Mottley in the 48th min reduced the tension. We gamely battled on and scored further goals through Stephenson on 64 mins and Jones in the 85 min allowed us to run out easy winners.
Sat. 25th Mar. 2006

v

O.Mancunians (a)   1 - 5 (ht.1-2)

scorers : K.Harford

Broughton visited Old Mancunians who are lying second in the league in search of points to avoid relegation. Both teams started brightly but after 5 min an error allowed old Mancs to take the lead. This encouraged Old Mancs who went further ahead from a corner after 15 mins. Broughton slowly got back into the game and started to apply some pressure which resulted in a flick on by Spensley being put into the net by K.Harford in the 41st min. Also in this period of pressure an open goal was missed. After half time the match was in the balance but an unforced error in the 64 min gave Old Mancs their third goal and an advantage that Broughton could not overcome. The next period saw the match become a ill tempered affair and all flowing football stopped. Old Mancs scored a fourth after 80 mins and completed their scoring 5 mins later through a converted penalty
Sat. 18th Mar. 2006

v

Radcliffe Town (a)   0 - 2 (ht. - )

scorers : -

After a three week lay off through bad weather we travelled to Radcliffe with the opportunity to ease our relegation problems. Conditions were not good for playing football with a strong cross wind and a surprising firm grassless pitch. Neither side could master the conditions and after 10 mins a Radcliffe cross cum shot drifted into the top corner. With both defences dealing comfortable with any attacks play continued in a scrappy way. In the second half nothing improved and apart from a brief flurry midway through the half from Broughton when Radcliffe's luck held as the ball hit their bar and a great shot was deflected to the goalkeeper the game continued in a stalemate. In the dying minute Radcliffe scored again from a penalty after a quick break.
Sat. 18th Feb. 2006

v

Bury GS (h>a)   3 - 5 (ht.1-4)

scorers : P.Harford, M.Jones, D.Spensley

As the pitch at Myerscough was unfit we switched the match to Bury for our home fixture with us having drawn 2-2 there earlier in the season. Our defence had a nightmare and we were two down after 8 minutes. Just as we thought the defence had managed to master a lively Bury forward line in the 28th min they scored another goal. Broughton fought back and Bury were reduced to ten men shortly before the 41 minute when as Bury argued with the ref over a non active player Spensley who ran onto a through ball, drew the goalkeeper and squared to P Harford to turn the ball into an open net. However 3 mins later poor marking at a free kick allowed Bury to score and Barry foolishly got sent off for an off the ball offence. Broughton's 10 men started to dominate the game and against the run of play a Bury fee kick was deflected past our goalkeeper. Broughton continued to press and Jones scored from a free kick after 72 mins quickly followed by Spensley scoring after a fine piece of dribbling and a wall pass with K Harford to leave the Bury defence struggling. Broughton pressurised Bury to the end but could not turn this into goals.
Sat. 4th Feb. 2006

v

Rochdale St. Clements (h)   3 - 1 (ht.2-1)

scorers : M.Jones, J.Mottley, G.Halse

We started with only two changes from last weeks winning side and against a strong Rochdale side the team continued in the form we ended last week. For the first 30 mins the match was finely balanced with end to end football. After 36 mins Jones reacted quickest and swept a loose ball into the net. Unfortunately the lead lasted only one minute when a Rochdale forward scored with a great shot from the edge of the penalty area. Within two minutes Broughton retrieved the lead when following a flowing move Mottley scored from a Harrington cross. The second half was also a thrilling contest until another flowing move down the right resulted in Halse sweeping the ball into the net. After this Rochdale lost their shape and the game became scrappy with the Broughton defence holding firm against some robust play. This win now puts in a position to climb away from the relagation position if we can continue with the good form.
Sat. 28th Jan. 2006

v

Mostonians (a)   2 - 1 (ht.0-0)

scorers : M.Jones, og.

We returned to winning ways with a hard fought win over the top of the league Mostonians. The first half was a scrappy affair with neither side being capable of stringing any significant number of passes together. As the second half progressed Broughton began to play the better football and built up the pressure on Moston. This finally resulted, after 80 mins, in a fine headed goal by Jones from one of the growing number of corners. Just when victory was in sight a neat turn in the penalty area earned Mostonians a penalty, which they duly converted. However Broughton went straight down the pitch and pressure from Spensley and Jones resulted in an own goal and the fully deserved victory.
Sat. 21st Jan. 2006

v

Lymm (h)   0 - 6 (ht.0-5)

scorers : -

In a match when we needed to come away with some points to arrest our slide down the league we started brightly and for the first 15 mins they was nothing between the teams. However a series of defensive errors saw us three goals down after 21 mins and five after 31 mins. The second half was much better ( it couldn't be worse !) and we were unlucky not to have a goal to show for all the hard work. Lymm scored another goal at the final whistle to complete the scoring. We need to build on the second half performance as we go into next weeks game against the top club away from home
Sat. 14th Jan. 2006

v

Bolton Lads Club (a)   0 - 3 (ht.0-1)

scorers : -

In our bottom of the table clash with Bolton Lads last minute cry-offs meant that we fielded a weakened side. Bolton dominated the first quarter of the match and eventually scored a goal after 20 mins. The remainder of the first half belonged to Bolton with Care making a number of fine saves whilst Broughton could only make one chance. The second half display was better but goals in the 57 and 60 mins sealed the match for Bolton. Probably our worst display since Mick took over.
Sat. 7th Jan. 2006

v

O.Mancunians (h)   0 - 3  (ht.0-1)

scorers : -

This game saw us playing our first match for four weeks, against Old Mancunians who were third in the league. Injuries forced a change to the system we played and this seemed to bring about a rejuvenated performance, especially in the first half, when we hit the bar and failed to take the chances made. Unfortunately a speculative overhead kick in the 35th min gave Old Mancs the lead. Five minutes into the second half a scrambled goal increased Old Mancs lead. Then only the post and goal line clearances prevent us reducing the lead. As the match progressed Old Mancunians took control and added a third in the 75th min as we pressed forward. Broughton continued to fight to the end and missed their chances to preserve their record of scoring in every match this season. The next two games have now become vital if we are not to become marooned in a relegation position.
Sat. 10th Dec. 2005

v

Little Lever SC (h)   1 - 2 (ht.0-1)

scorers : J.Mottley

Little Lever began brighter of the two teams and scored within the first five minutes, following a failed attempt to properly clear our lines from a seemingly harmless cross. They continued to look the sharper of the two sides until midway into the half when we started to compete, although our chances were few and far between - a free kick being our only real attempt on goal. The start of the second half was no better and sloppy play by Broughton offered the visitors a chance seconds after kick off - which they didn't waste. Broughton, as in the first half, eventually came to, and began to make a game of it. Eventually a Mottley goal, minutes from the end, turned out to be our only reward for what was a less than convincing Broughton display.
Sat. 3rd Dec. 2005

v

Oldham Hulmeians (h)   1 - 3 (ht.1-0)

scorers : D.Spensley

We began brightly and Spensley scored with a powerful header at the far post after 7 mins. As the half progressed and further chances were missed Oldham began to get more and more into the game. Immediately after half time Oldham equalised and although this spurred Broughton on for the next 15 mins we failed to convert the chances and confidence waned. Substitions failed to lift the side and after 70 mins Oldham scored their second. Just as we were trying to lift ourselves for a final onslaught Mason was sent off and Oldham got a fortunate goal to kill off the match. This was by far the worst performance of the season and improvement is vital if we want to avoid dropping into the relegation dogfight.
Sat. 26th Nov. 2005

v

Prairie United (h)   2 - 2 (ht.0-1)

scorers : J.Greenwood, J.Mottley

Broughtons team was weakened not only by injuries but by two of the younger members being away representing Lancs FA under eighteens. Prairie started brighter than us and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring after 20 mins. This brought more effort from Broughton and a sound defensive display held that score until half time. The half time talk had the desired effect as two minutes into the second half an intricate build up resulted in Greenwood opening the scoring for Broughton. Seven minutes later Mottley beat the goalkeeper to a through ball and scored from an acute angle. After 60 mins Prairie equalised from a free kick and the match became a much more open game with both sides having opportunities to win the match. With only seven points separating the third team to the next to the bottom in the league a few consecutive wins will undoubtedly see us climb the table.
Sat. 19th Nov. 2005

v

Bury GS (a)   2 - 2 (ht.2-1)

scorers : J.Greenwood, J.Mottley

Both sides took some time to get to grips with the frozen ground but just as Broughton were settling down a re-occurrence of G.Smith's knee injury meant a reorganisation of the defence. In the 30th min a miss hit free kick fell to a Bury player who opened their scoring. This appeared to spark Broughton into life and after 35 mins a well taken free kick by Greenwood equalised the score. This was quickly followed in the 43rd min when Mottley beat the goalkeeper to a through ball and expertly finished. Broughton now settled down and began to play some excellent football. As so often happens, in one of Bury's few attacks they scored from a free kick with 30 mins to go. This again spurred Broughton on and only some fine goalkeeping, unkind decisions and a lack of calmness in front of goal prevented us regaining the lead and what would've been a deserved victory.
Sat. 29th Oct. 2005

v

Mostonians (h)   1 - 3  (ht.0-1)

scorers : J.Mottley

We failed to make it five games without defeat. Both sides began the match at a breakneck pace showing non of the flowing football that both sides are capable of. There was little between the teams until in the 31st min Broughton failed to close down Mostonians fullback whose cross was converted from close range. This settled Mostonians who started to control the game. After half time both defences dominated with few chances for both forward lines. After 76 mins Platt saved at the the foot of the post from a free kick only to see the Mostonian centre forward follow up and score from an acute angle. This goal sparked Broughton into life and five minutes later they got a goal back through a fine strike from Mottley. Unfortunately another mistake gave Moston their two goal cushion back. As Broughton continued to press for goals gaps were left at the back but Platt made a string of saves to prevent further scoring from Moston.

Sat. 22nd Oct. 2005

v

Lymm (a)   1 - 0  (ht.0-0)

scorers : J.Greenwood

We travelled to Lymm hoping to extend an unbeaten run to four games, and although one of our team members suffered a breakdown (mechanical not mental) he manage to arrive with minutes to spare. We started brightly and had the better of the early exchanges but let opportunities to score slip by. As the half progressed Lymm came more into the game and the half ended with the two defences dominating. Two minutes into the second half Greenwood harassed the Lymm defence, and after robbing their defender slotted the ball home from an acute angle, a tidy finish. The next period of the game saw the defences again dominating. As Lymm piled on the pressure the Broughton defence stood firm with Platt dealing with anything that got passed them. Both teams had the opportunity to score in this period but the final score remained 1-0 to Broughton. A hard fought victory.
Sat. 15th Oct. 2005

v

Bolton Lads Club (h)   2 - 1  (ht.1-0)

scorers : J.Greenwood, J.Mottley

For the third week running the same eleven started, first time in at least 2 years, and this helped us have the better of the early exchanges and dominated the first half. After 20 mins we at last broke down the offside trap through our in-form "attacking mid-fielder" Greenwood who calmly opened the scoring. Broughton were unable to convert their domination into further goals and went in at half time only one goal up. Bolton came more into the game in the second half and their centre forward equalised with a good individual goal after 57 mins. The match was in the balance until substitutions by Broughton injected more pace. These included a welcome return after a severe injury to Graham Mason, James Mottley and crazy legs AKA Rick Wharton. Straight away Mason knocked a "quality!" ball down the line to Jones who played a precise through ball which was latched onto by Mottley to restore the lead with eight minutes to play. Bolton in their attempt to equalise left more gaps at the back which we failed to take advantage of. Mick E. promised Jonesy that his open net miss, which would have made the scoreline more respectable wouldn`t be mentioned. So it wont be!
Sat. 8th Oct. 2005

v

Rossendale Ams (a)   1 - 1  (ht.0-1)

scorers : J.Greenwood

On a miserable wet day we went to Rossendale who had a 100% record in the league. The match was dominated by two strong defences and Rossendale started the match stronger and went ahead from a defensive mistake after 27 mins. This appeared to spur on Broughton who finished the half on top. As the second half progressed Broughton became the stronger side and after 79 mins Greenwood latched onto a loose ball and thundered in a long range drive to equalise. Although pressing hard we could not get the winner as the Rossendale defence stood firm.
Sat. 1st Oct. 2005

v

Bolton Wyresdale (h)   4 - 1  (ht.2-1) LAL Cup Rd 2

scorers : D.Spensley 2, K.Harford, J.Greenwood

The 2nd round of the LAL cup saw us drawn against Bolton Wyresdale - one of the few teams that had beaten us last season. Despite our early domination of the match, a goal in the 12th minute gave the vistors an unexpected lead. We continued to create chances and would have equalised in the 35th minute - were it not for Bolton's keeper. Two goals in as many minutes by D.Spensley finally gave Broughton the breakthrough and the lead going into the break. Bolton applied more pressure at the start of the Second half but failed to convert their chances, so the timing of K.Harford's composed finish in the 60th minute was important as it gave us a two goal cushion. We regained control of the match from this point and sealed the victory with a clinical Greenwood strike minutes from time.
Sat. 24th Sept. 2005

v

Radcliffe Town (h)  2 - 3 (ht.1-0)

scorers : S.Iddon, M.Jones

The first half was an evenly contested match with Broughton taking the lead in the 30 min through Jones who latched onto a Radcliffe error. Straight after the interval Radcliffe equalised and started to gain the upper hand in midfield helped by an injury to Murch. Broughton kept battling and in the 63rd min a great shot from Iddon restored the lead. Just when it seemed that Radcliffe had run out of ideas two goals in five minutes towards the end of the match sealed a victory for them.
Sat. 17th Sept. 2005

v

Remyca (h)   2 - 5 (ht.0-3) LFA Cup Rd 1

scorers : K.Harford 2

On a day when injuries and absences depleted the side we we could not match the finishing of Remyca United from the Zingari league. Although we had more of the early play two great strikes in the 20th & 25th min put them two up. Just before half time they added another. Then five mins into the second half another goal for Remyca sealed the tie. Broughton continued to battle and K Hartford scored two goals in the second half whilst Remyca added a fifth.
Sat. 10th Sept. 2005

v

Bacup United (h)   8 - 0  (ht.5-0)
LAL Cup Rd 1

scorers : J.Greenwood (3), J.Jones, M.Jones,
                 J.Graham, P.Stephenson, og

NB: All 4 teams won today The Bacup defence held for the first ten minutes and then we scored three goals in a five minute period from Greenwood (2) and J.Jones. This virtually settled the tie and two further goals by half time, from M.Jones and an own goal assured the result. Further goals from Graham, Stephenson and Greenwood again completed the goal scoring. A competent performance against a side from a lower division
Sat. 3rd Sept. 2005

v

Little Lever SC (a)  3 - 2  (ht.3-1)

scorers : Jones, K.Harford, P.Harford

Another good performance and we finally got the win we deserved. After coming out the blocks much more determined than the home team we got a 3-1 lead at ht through Jones and the Harfords. Although they did reduce the arrears in the second half we held on comfortably to get our first 3 pointer - of many we hope!
Sat. 27th Aug. 2005

v

Chaddertonians (a)  3 - 3  (ht.0-1)

scorers : Greenwood, Elgee, P.Harford

Similar story to last week where we battled hard to gain a 3-1 advantage well into the 2nd half after good approach work led to goals for Greenwood, Elgee and Paul H. But we failed to hold on and had to settle for our first point of the campaign.
Sat. 20th Aug. 2005

v

Rossendale Ams (h)  1 - 2 (ht.1-1)

scorers : K.Harford

We got the perfect start in the premier division when after two minutes an excellent cross by Greenwood was headed home by K Harford at the back post. We continued to trouble their defence through the pace of Mottley but failed to convert our chances. After 25 mins a defensive error allowed Rossendale to equalise. The game became tighter in the second half and few opportunities were created by both sides. However in the 60th minute after some clever wing play Rossendale scored a second. Although we pressed hard and had a good penalty claim turned down we could not equalise. Welcome to the Premeir !!

Sat. 22nd Apr. 2006

v

Rochdale St. Clements (a)   1 - 5 (ht.0-0)

scorers : S.Fenton

With a weakened team out we matched them in the first half but when they got ahead in the 2nd half we couldn't get back at them and they scored seemingly at will. We only had a strike from Fenners to show for our brave efforts.

v

Oldham Hulmeians (h)   3 - 2 (ht.1-1)

scorers : N.Eccles, C.Duffy, F.Patel

A scrappy game compared with last weeks flowing football. Due in no small part to the fact that they played better and we played worse than last week. We still dominated, though unconvincingly, and it was only our knack of scoring at the right times that saw us thru, and enabled us to claim all three vital points.

v

Oldham Hulmeians (a)   7 - 2 (ht.4-1)

scorers : C Duffy 2, P Stephenson 2, N Eccles, R Wharton, P Monks

We registered a comfortable victory on a pitch that is renowned for not being the best. In the first half we started off very sharp and quick, playing some superb passing football and this resulted with 4 goals in the first 20 minutes. Duffy was the first to score when he beat the off side trap to race through and beat the keeper, Eccles was next when his well timed run saw him collect the ball just inside the box to fire past the keeper, then it was Stephenson who made it 3-0 with a neat finish from the edge of the box and Wharton made it 4 when he was sent steaming through to finish coolly from 10 yards. Leading up to half time we stepped of the gas and let Oldham nick a goal after a weak back pass. After the break everything turned sloppy, the pitch was a mess but we stuck at it and tried our best to play football. Monks made it 5-1 when he headed home from 1 yard and then Duffy scored his second to make it 6. With 20 minutes left it was hard work to create anything with the ball just sticking in the mud but we did make it 7 when Stephenson scored another. In the dying minutes Oldham scored another consolation but they were out played from start to finish. Surprisingly we're back to the top of the league after this result with the leaders not having played and we also made sure that the only team who can now pip us to promotion are 15 points behind (but have 7 games in hand) so fingers crossed but overall it’s been a superb day. Well done lads.

v

Bolton Wyresdale (h)   4 - 0 (ht.1-0)

scorers : N.Eccles 2, C.Duffy, P.Stephenson

A pretty even first half saw both teams really working hard to keep possession and create some goal scoring opportunities. Our defence was on fine form this week preventing Wyersdale from any sort of clear chances. Right on the stroke of half time we deservedly took the lead through Eccles who capitalised on a rebounded shot to smash home. After the break we dominated and extended our lead when Duffy scored his first for 6 games and it couldn’t have got any better because within minutes it was 3 when Stephenson powered forward through the opposing back line to neatly knock past the keeper. After a couple of substitutions and an outstanding save from Ryan in goals Eccles made it 4-0 with a cool finish from a tight angle. We hit the post late on and had a goal disallowed but really we could've won by more. Overall a good performance and well done to the defence who kept their first clean sheet this year !!

v

Prairie Utd (a)   1 - 4 (ht.0-2)

scorers : J.Greenwood

A performance that will want to be forgotten straight away. They were gifted an early goal after sloppy defensive play at a corner allowed a soft tap in from 2 yards, and minutes later it should have been 2-0 after Liam gave away a blatant penalty, and was lucky to stay on the pitch, but keeper Simon brilliantly saved the penalty. Prairie continued to open our defence up using the wings to great effect and a 2nd goal followed a flowing move. A stern half time talk from Wayne saw an improvement, but early on a needless foul gave them a free kick which they scored 3-0. With ten minutes to go Greenwood finally scored. A final push came and in what should have been a penalty after a foul on Rawsthorn wasn't given they broke away a scored a 4th. Captain Bell chased the referee in dispute and firing foul language to the official he was shown a straight red.

v

Bury GS (h)   7 - 5 (ht.2-4)

scorers : N.Eccles 3, P.Monks 2, S.Bambar, L.McGladrigan

Well what a game of two halves, we took the lead early on through Monks but within 10 minutes we found ourselves 3-1 after some lazy defending. We did pull one goal back when Eccles found the net but just before the break it was 4-2 after some more slack marking from a free-kick. After the break it couldn’t have got any worse with Bury taking a 5-2 lead minutes into the half. But them somehow the game changed to our favour and a very strong revival came about. We made it 5-3 when Monks was found unmarked at the back post to tap home and within 2 minutes it was 5-4 when Eccles was sent through to chip the keeper. We continued to pile on the pressure and got our just rewards when L. McGladrigan scored a powerful header from a corner to bring us level. Then somehow we took the lead, a Mottley shot was parried by the keeper only to fall to Eccles who buried it from close range. Bury tried to push forward but our defence managed to deal with it and to wrap up an amazing comeback with the best goal of the day S. Bambar out-paced the Bury back line and knock it past the keeper from 18 yards. Overall a good victory but it was far from a good performance.

v

Rochdale St. Clements (h)   3 - 1 (ht.0-0)

scorers : J.Seddon 2, N.Eccles

It's hard to believe how we played after the awful performance last week. We started very sharply this week keeping a fast tempo up for the majority of the first half, our defence was solid as were Rochdale’s so inevitably both teams cancelled each other out. After the restart it was a different story, 3 goals in 10 minutes completely stunned our opponents and showed why we are second in the league. The first goal can from the penalty spot after Duffy was upended in the box, Seddon stepped up and smashed home. Our second came from Eccles, who collected a superb through ball from Fenton his first attempt was parried by the keeper but he made sure with the second. Then straight from Rochdale’s kick off we won the ball back and played in Chamberlain, his deep cross was meet by Seddon at the back post to head in from 10 yards. We did give one goa! away but we were extremely happy with the 3 points we thoroughly deserved.

v

Hesketh Casuals (a)   3 - 5 (ht.1-2)

scorers : S.Rawsthorn, C.Bell, P.Stephenson

Our first defeat in 12 league matches was a bitter pill to swallow and an advertisement on how not to play football. We started well taking a 1 nil lead through Rawsthorn (One of 4 players helping out a personnel depleted league title chasing squad) but from then on it went from bad to worse. Defensive mistakes and overall lack of concentration all over the park saw us fall 2-1 behind before the break. Things did look up when Bell scored a powerful header from a corner but again we fell asleep and made Hesketh look like world beaters and ourselves like an under 11 Sunday side. At 5-2 down P.Stephenson scored a consolation but we ended up with only what we deserved - nuthin.
Sat. 14th Jan. 2006

v

O.Mancunians (h)   3 - 3 (ht.2-1)

scorers : J.Seddon, K.Harford, R.Chamberlain

We took the lead early in the match through K. Harford who capitalised on a goal keeping error to knock the ball home from 18 yards. It was 2-0 shortly after when Seddon beat the keeper to a low cross tapping the ball into the net from 2 yards. There wasn’t much separating the teams after this but Old Mancs pulled themselves back into the game right on the stroke of half time. After the restart Old Mancs maintained possession but never seemed to trouble our keeper and we punished them for it going 3-1 up through Chamberlain, his neat chip landing in the top corner from outside the box. Straight from the kick off they were awarded a free kick 25 yards out which they converted, they continued to press at us and in the dying minutes they were again awarded a free kick, the ball was played into the box and the resulting header looped over our keeper to make it 3-3. After being 2-0 up and 3-1 up this result was definitely 2 points dropped

v

Radcliffe Town (a)  2 - 1  (ht.0-1)

scorers : N.Eccles, C.Duffy

We started the New Year with another victory but after a below average first half performance we were lucky to get anything at all. Both teams hadn’t played for a few weeks and it was obvious the Christmas period had taken its toll. At half time we were 1-0 down through a P.Monks own goal (typical !) but after the break we showed some signs why were top of the league. Our equalizer came from a corner taken by Seddon, his pin point cross into the box was met by Duffy who headed home from 6 yards. Continuing to press on we created more chances but nearly through it away when our own defenders started squaring the ball across our own goal line. The game looked to be ending in a draw but with minutes left on the clock Duffy made a darting run down the left wing, he pulled a pass back to the edge of the area were Eccles was to fire past the keeper into the bottom corner. After an even contest again we ended up on top and fingers crossed this season we can finish the league there.

v

Thornleigh (h)    3 - 1  (ht.1-1)

scorers : N.Eccles 3

Another well earned victory took us top of the league for Xmas. In the cold and icy conditions we didn’t start well at all, within the first 10 minutes we were 1 nil down and could have been worse if it hadn’t been for some good defending. Eventually things were looking up as more chances were created but it wasn't until just before the interval that we found ourselves level when a well timed through ball from Schultz was met by Eccles who continued his run forward to fire passed the keeper. The second half kicked off and within 45 seconds we were in front. Eccles running onto a long ball over the top, he beat the last defender and then clipped the ball over the advancing keeper into the net. After going in front we were never really put under any pressure, we continued to attack and our third goal came from a typical Seddon run down the right wing, he made it all the way into the box and squared to Eccles who simply placed it past the keeper from 6 yards. Credit to the defence who kept Thornleigh at bay for the rest of the second half. Overall it was 3 points that we deserved lets hope we can keep it up in the New Year.
Sat. 10th Dec. 2005

v

Old Blackburnians (a)   6 - 6 (ht.2-3)

scorers : J.Seddon 3, N.Eccles 2, S.Fenton

The top 2 met for the second time this season and what a game it turned out to be. Old Blacks are still the only team in the league to beat us this season so we knew we had to be up for it from the start. The first 10 minutes were pretty even until we got our noses in front through Seddon whose shot from the corner of the 18 yard box lobbed the keeper and flew into the top corner. We were on the back foot from then on and within 10 minutes it was 1-1, still on the back foot we counter attacked and won a corner. The corner kick never made it passed their first defender, but his clearance was only met by Seddon 40 yards out and on his weaker right foot he sent a screaming effort flying into the top corner (by far the best goal this season). However Old Blacks continued to push forward and scored an equalizer then right on the stroke of half time they scored again were 3-2 up at the interval. After strong words of encouragement from the manager and captain we showed no signs of concentration from the restart and found ourselves 4-2 down. Eventually we started to retain possession in midfield and push forward to try and get back into the game. We were all over Old Blacks and were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal, Seddon stepped up and his shot was only parried by the keeper straight to the feet of Fenton who rapped the ball home. We were back in the game and our much deserved equalizer came shortly after when Eccles raced away down the left wing and fired across the keeper into the bottom corner. We worked extremely hard to get back on level terms and ended up 5-4 to the good when a deflected shot from Seddon sent the keeper the wrong way and got him his hat-trick. Within a matter of minutes tho Old Blacks crawled back to level the scores again at 5-5. With only 2 minutes left of normal time victory might have been snatched when a squared ball from Monks played in Eccles whose powerful shot beat the keeper. But it wasn’t to be and with Old Blacks last attack they nicked a point with a late late equaliser.

v

Bolton Wyresdale (a)   5 - 4 (ht.4-2)

scorers : J.Seddon 2, C.Duffy 2, L.Shultz

A very important win against one of the contenders for the league saw us take top spot for the first time this season. We were off the mark 10 minutes into the match after a scramble in the box, the ball fell to Seddon who cut inside the last man and neatly slotted home. But, as usually happens, Wyresdale were back on level terms minutes after the restart. We kept a cool head and continued to press forward and in the space of 10 minutes we found ourselves 4-1 up. The first goal coming from a great run out of midfield from Schultz who had plenty of time from the edge of the area to pick his spot, the second goal came from a great counter attack from Duffy, he raced through the back line to smash home passed the helpless keeper and the 4th, again from Duffy who found space on the right wing, he wrong footed the last man and sent the keeper diving the wrong way with his shot. But only seconds after this fourth goal had gone in Wyresdale found the net for the second time ! and started to fight back. After the break Wyresdale netted again and we struggled to keep possession and found ourselves under a lot of pressure. Midway through the second half after a lot of scrappy football we scored our fifth, a delightful deep cross from the left wing from Eccles was met on the volley by Seddon who smashed the ball home. This encouraged our football again and we could have gone on to score 2 or 3 more. But we didn’t and in the dying seconds Wyresdale pulled another one back but it was too late as they had nothing to match our first half domination.

v

Prairie United (h)   4 - 4 (ht.2-1)

scorers : P.Harford 3, C.Duffy

Our first draw of the season saw the end of our 5 game winning streak. We started brightly but created very few chances. However after 30 minutes we were awarded a penalty, unfortunately like last week Monks stepped up . . . and missed !! even with the rebound he only managed to hit the post and was obviously too embarrassed to "front-up" in the pub afterwards. The penalty miss didn’t dishearten us though as we found ourselves 1-0 up thanks to Paul H whose darting run from midfield resulted in a 25 yard effort which found the net. Five minutes before the break Prairie were back on level terms but straight from the restart Rick Wharton broke down the right wing and set Paul up for his second of the game. After the break Prairie were on level terms within the first minute, which we couldn’t believe, however we never let our heads drop and continued to play some good football. The chances kept on coming and our third goal came again from the right hand side when R. Wharton’s deep cross was met at the back post with a powerful header from P. Harford for his Hat- Trick. We didn’t want to let them back in again and pressed even harder for another goal, the fourth goal we deserved came except not from the chances we created but from a miss-kick clearance from their keeper which landed straight to the feet of Duffy who neatly lobbed the ball home from 30 yards. With us being 4-2 up with 15 minutes to play we should have easily wrapped the game up, instead we put ourselves under pressure and conceded 2 late goals. We deserved nothing less than 3 points from the first 75 minutes but a game of football is 90 and we switched off too early.
Sat. 12th Nov. 2005

v

Bury GS (a)  2 - 0  (ht.1-0)

scorers : P.Harford, R.Wharton

Our 5th straight victory in the league but it wasn’t easy due to the wet conditions. The first half was scrappy with the ball skidding all over the pitch, but Bury never really threatened us at all and anything they did throw forward our defence coped with ease. We took the lead in the first half through P. Harford, he closed down the centre half and his clearance rebounded of Harfords foot into the roof of the net - reward for persistence and good work. After the break both teams livened up but it was us who took the upper hand, we battled hard and cancelled out all their attacking options. We had a good chance to go 2-0 up from the penalty spot after P. Harford was up-end in the box (well so the ref said it was 5 yards outside) Monks stepped up but the keeper guessed which way and saved it. We dominated the last 15 minutes of play and our reward came from Wharton who had switched over to the left, dribbled into the box and curled a superb effort into the top corner. We saw out the last few minutes and although we didn’t play to our full potential it was a hard fought game which we deservedly came out on top.

v

Hesketh Casuals (h)   3 - 2  (ht.3-1)

scorers : N.Eccles 2, P.Monks

An impressive win against top of the table Hesketh Casuals took us to joint top in the league. After falling a goal behind within the first 5 minutes we livened up and played some fabulous football creating a number of attacking opportunities. Our equaliser came soon after Hesketh had taken the lead when P. Harford was sent sprinting down the right wing, he skinned their full back and whipped in a delightful ball which Eccles met to score with a powerful header. We continued to out-play Hesketh using the width of the pitch to our advantage, Alston, Seddon and Shultz playing a huge part with their skills and one touch passing. It was from a well worked move from these players that our second goal came along after a good interchange of passing Seddon broke free down the left hand side and squared the ball to Eccles who controlled the pass and slotted it passed the keeper. Still maintaining our fluent football we pressed forward again, this time the ball falling to Monks who somehow injected a burst of speed into his stride and powered his way into the box to fire under the keeper to make 3 – 1 at half time. After the break we settled down a bit too early and let our foot of the gas. Both teams cancelled each other out and our defence stayed firm reducing them to long range efforts that were dealt with comfortable by Wayne in nets. We could have made it 4-1 but after Eccles had rounded the keeper his shot only found the inside of the post. As time ran out Hesketh pulled one back but it was too late as we had total control of possession and saw the game through.

v

O.Mancunians (a)   3 - 2  (ht.1-1)

scorers : C.Duffy, N.Eccles 2

Our 3rd consecutive league win takes us to the dizzy heights of 3rd in the league. After nearly 90 minutes of driving we arrived and got the game on the way. We started slowly and only switched on after Old Mancunians had gone 1-0 up. Our 2 centre midfielders Schultz and P. Harford worked extremely hard and controlled the game for us creating plenty of attacking opportunities for our wing men and forwards. Our creative play was rewarded late on in the half when Seddon launched a long throw into the box towards Eccles, he flicked the ball on and Duffy judged the bounce perfectly to volley into the roof of the net. After the break we continued to work hard but found ourselves behind again when our Captain and Star Defender Chris Bell dribbled the ball into his own net. We could have been! level within a minute but Eccles missed a glorious chance however he made amends soon after when Alston sent him running down the left wing, he beat the last defender and scored a cracker from outside the box with his right foot. Still maintaining possession well, we completed our come back when Duffy attacked down the right flank, he took it to the corner and rolled it across for Eccles who pulled it back and fired home. With 20 minute’s still remaining Old Mancunians pilled on the pressure but the 2 centre backs Bell and Monks, and Ryan in nets (who was outstanding again) kept it together and made sure the 3 points were safe.

v

Radcliffe Town (h)   3 - 2  (ht.2-0)

scorers : P.Harford, N.Eccles, C.Duffy

We started very brightly against the unbeaten Radcliffe playing some very attacking football. We were in front after 10 minutes when Eccles broke free down the right wing, he neatly cut inside the last defender and fired home. We piled on more pressure after this in search of a second and it rightly came when Duffy was sent through to easily beat the keeper slotting the ball in the bottom right hand corner. We should have been 3 or 4 nil up at half time but after an outstanding first half performance we were happy to be 2 up. After the break we took our foot of the gas a bit too soon letting Radcliffe back into the game. They pushed more players upfront and 15 minutes into the half they were awarded a penalty. They scored and continued to push forward and to our disbelief they equalised. We all couldn’t believe what was happening after our first half display, changes were made and we started playing football again. It was going to ! take something special to win this match and it came from P. Harford who scored a unbelievable goal smashing the ball into the net off the cross bar. It would have been harsh if had lost but after a goal worthy of winning any match and we’ll gladly take the 3 points.

v

Tottington Utd (a)  2 - 5 (ht.2-3) Cup Rd 2

scorers : J.Seddon, N.Eccles

A heavy defeat to a lower league side saw us crash out of the cup. We started brightly and were 1 nil up in the first minute when an Eccles shot from outside the area slipped under the keeper and into the net. Tottingham were level minutes later but we were back in front when Seddon curled a brilliant shot in to the top corner. The match became a bit tighter after this with both teams playing some good football. But it was Tottingham who took advantage of their possession and equalised. Then just on the stroke of half time they scored again to lead at the break. After the restart we went to pieces, we had a goal disallowed for no apparent reason and some very harsh decisions cast against us. In all fairness the quality of the pitch didn’t help with our passing game deteriorating all the time. Tottingham (who must be used to playing on a pitch that bad) took total control and scored 2 more goals before the end. Overall our performance was as good as the pitch, starting off smoothly and ending in a mess.

v

Thornleigh (a)  4 - 3 (ht.2-1)

scorers : C.Duffy 2, P.Monks, N.Eccles

Looking to improve on our last victory we couldn’t have had a worst start when a mix up between our keeper and defender let in their forward to put them 1-0 up. After this we settled down and really took control of the game and were back in it when Duffy knocked home at the near post from corner. Within a minute we were 2-1 up when a great team move lead to a superb goal from Eccles. After the break we were still in control but we gifted Thornleigh a chance to equalise from the spot. Their first penalty was missed but the ref was on hand to give them another chance after some encroaching in the box. At 2-2 we still maintained possession well and we also were awarded a penalty which Pete Monks calmly slotted home. With full time approaching we again switched off at the end and let them in again to make it 3-3. The final whistle was immanent but with one final attack we got the ball in t! he box and Duffy was there to knock it over the keeper. In the end the result doesn’t reflect our well maintained possession and attacking football but its a good 3 points on the board.
Sat. 10th Sept. 2005

v

Prairie United (a)   2 - 0  (ht.1-0 ) Cup Rd 1

scorers : C.Duffy, N.Eccles

NB: All 4 teams won today Not a very comfortable win against a side that started the game with only 10 men. We maintained possession very well but couldn’t create any clear chances resulting with lots of long range efforts. We got our break through right on the stroke of half time when Duffy headed home. In the second half we were all over the place giving the ball away and losing possession putting us all under pressure. Eccles had a goal ruled out but then he netted our second smashing the ball home from 12 yards. We made this win very hard work and should have finished it off well before we did.
Sat. 3rd Sept. 2005

v

Old Blackburnians (h)   2 - 3  (ht.1-1)

scorers : L.Schultz, N.Eccles

A below par performance saw the 2nds lose on the opening day. After a pretty even start and both teams hitting the wood work we took the lead from a corner when Schultz knocked the ball home after a near post flick on. Nothing seemed to go our way after this and they got back into it right on the stroke of half time. Straight after the restart we went behind and never seemed like coming back. But we kept our heads and got a equalizer in the closing stages when the keepers kick bounced over the defence for Eccles to run onto and neatly place over the advancing keeper. With only minutes to go and just when we thought we had rescued a point they were awarded a penalty which was converted leaving us empty handed.

O.Blacks 'A' (h)   0 - 2 (ht.0-1)  Cup Semi Final

scorers : -

After being losing finalists last season a we couldn't manage to get to the final this time and make amends, as Old Blacks from 2 divisions above took both their chances in what was a tight & close game that both teams really cancelled each other out. Old Blacks took the lead as early as the 10th minute after poor marking down our right gifted them the break and the squared pass was tapped in from 6yrds. The rest of the first half saw neither keeper really tested with our defence standing firm but Blacks dominating in the middle. H-T 0-1. The 2nd half started pretty much the same although chances started to come our way and Adam saw a 25 yarder smash against the crossbar. Kieran replaced Winny and Shirley and Swanny later entered the fray. Opportunities were coming quite often now but the final ball to the front and wide men just wasn't happening for us, they caught us on the break with 10mins to go and sealed the win. Better luck next year when hopefully we can go 1 better. Thanks again from all the lads to the gaffer Doug Birch for organising the season successfully again.

O.Boltonians 'B'  (h)  4 - 2 (ht.4-0)

scorers : S.Rawsthorn, B.Ssebatta, A.Huddlestone, C.Duffy

Once again we had a bright start and dominated the 1st half. The difference this week was we took full advantage of our dominance by scoring 4 times with no reply during this period. It all started after 10 mins when a good interchange of passes between Lafferty and Duffy saw his flighted cross headed (which is rare for Simon) home by Rawsthorn. Then Duffy was fouled in the box and Ben confidently stroked home the penalty. Adam smacked home a 30 yard piledriver then Carl finally got on the scoresheet himself when he outpaced the defence and slipped the ball past the keeper. So 4-0 at HT did not flatter us and we missed a few one-on-one's with their keeper in both halves. They got 2 goals in the last 10 mins as we did our usual 2nd half performance but we deservedly finished with all the points after a solid team performance.
Note: This was Trev Lafferty's last appearance for Broughton having decided, at 48½, to (finally) hang up those boots. He played since mid 1970's in a playing career spanning nearly 35 years representing all teams and giving solid service as player, manager and Secretary for 10 yrs - so it was good to see him finish on the winning side after 827 appearances scoring 239 goals in the process.

Horwich RMI 'A'  (a)   1 - 4 (ht.1-0)

scorers : J.McHugh

A real scrappy game saw us dominate the 1st half but only have Jim's fine strike from the edge of the box as reward. However yet another lack-lustre 2nd half showing saw us crash to another disappointing defeat. A defensive slip-up gifted them the equaliser, then slack marking from a corner saw them take the lead. We rallied but failed to score from the few chances we created, then on the counter attack they stung us with two goals in the last 5 mins to give them a flattering score line.

Bolton Wyresdale 'A'  (h)   2 - 4 (ht.2-0)

scorers : S.Rawsthorn, R.Pomfret

This was definitely a game of 2 halves. Played on a very heavy pitch we seemed to be coasting taking a early lead for the 2nd week running with Rawsthorn following up a saved effort from Major to tap in from 6yards. 1-0 soon became 2-0 when good pressure produced a corner from which Pommy scored direct. Although possession of the ball was pretty even they never threatened our goal and were restricted to distance efforts. H-T 2-0. We were looking for more of the same in the 2nd period but it all went wrong early on when two quick goals brought them level. On 75 mins we again lost possession in midfield and they punished us to take the lead then soon after were able to break the defence down to score again and go into a 4-2 lead. With gaps widening in the centre of midfield changes were made to try and stop the free flowing moves Wyresdale were now producing. We continued to work hard but were unable to breakthrough and they saw the game out efficiently. Overall the team again showed its lack in killing teams off at the times we are dominating and allowed them back in. Still we've a cup semi at home in April to look forward to.

scorers : S. Rawsthorn

A gritty performance that earned us the points. They never had us under any sustained pressure and we felt in control but with only Simon's goal between the sides anything could've happened. Unlike other matches we marshalled the defence well and kept a clean sheet to run out deserved winners.

Horwich RMI 'A'  (h)   1 - 2 (ht.0-0)

scorers : M.Bowerman

Coming off the back of two good results, confidence was high. When the visitors were reduced to 10 men within half an hour after a clash of heads that required a hospital visit and no substitutes for Horwich, we ought to have been able to capitalise. Although it was goalless at the break we were on top without creating too many clear cut chances. Into the second period, and we became increasingly guilty of assuming we'd win given our numerical advantage. Horwich scored without ever having any meaningful possession, when a long punt over the defence saw our centre half slip and their forward nipped in to score. We equalised shortly after, Bowerman heading home after Swan had crossed from left side of the penalty area. Crossing the ball was our problem all day and this should've indicated the way to unlock their defence. Still we were unable to make the extra man count, and Horwich retook the lead in similar fashion except it was a slip-up in midfield that needlessly gifted them possession. Despite various substitutions and tactical changes we were unable to get an equaliser. The most frustrating of games slipped away as we couldn't get crosses into the danger zone to pressure their defence and ended up losing, yet another game we should've won. We play the reverse fixture next week, so revenge will be fresh in our minds...

Oldham Hulmeians 'A' (h)   5 - 1 (ht.0-0)

scorers : C.Bradshaw 3, S.Rawsthorn, R.Swan

Last year, despite them finishing bottom of our division, we were unable to beat Oldham, drawing both games. At half time it was looking like our jinx was going to strike again, we were unable to break the deadlock although we had laid siege to the Oldham goal. Our pressure was rewarded early in the second half though, Swan heading on a huge kick from Hurst into the path of Rawsthorn who cut inside from the left to score from a narrow angle. One soon became two, Bradshaw tapping in following their keepers parry from Swan's cross-shot. Chris added a 3rd, his 2nd, in a devastating 5 minute spell, that ought to have put the game beyond the away teams reach. Oldham pulled one back, with their only real effort on goal. The next goal could be crucial, and Swan duly netted the 4th after good work from Pomfret & Lafferty. Bradshaw claimed the 5th and his hat-trick from Rawsthorns cross to wrap up a good performance and result.

Bolton Wyresdale 'A' (a)   1 - 0 (ht.0-0)

scorers : S.Walmsley

We've finally got our 1st win of the year! Hopefully this can be the start of a renewed charge for promotion? We dominated the whole game despite the scoreline, and but for some profligate finishing, last ditch tackles, and fine goalkeeping from Bolton it would have been a more comfortable win. We bossed the 1st half without actually scoring, Simon in nets was a virtual spectator. Despite a slightly shaky start to the 2nd half, during which the home team hit the bar, the 2nd half looked like going the same way. Until that is, Dougie made a substitution, debutant Adam making way for another debut boy - Steve. Steve scored the only goal within minutes of coming on, volleying into the roof of the net following a partial clearance from a corner. Bolton pressed for an equaliser and we tried to hit them on the break, but despite a late yellow card for Winnie - for the most blatant of handballs - we held on for 3 deserved/needed points.

Thornleigh 'B' (a)   2 - 3 (ht2-1)

scorers : C.Bradshaw 2

A game that we still cannot believe we lost. We started great and after 15 and 30 mins Bradshaw scored two great goals however before, after and in between we contrived to miss many more chances. They scored just before half time to keep the score line respectable but in a boxing match we'd have been declared winners long before this but, like in boxing, there's always the chance of a sucker punch and we fell for it. The second half saw our continued dominance but it was they who scored with a thunderbolt from outside the box and then on another rare punt into our box they stabbed in another to take a shock lead which we just couldn't pull back. A surreal feeling after the match we spent so much time in their half and in possession of the ball totally controlling the game - but failed to take our chances. With hindsight we should've been more direct on a bobbly pitch that didn't suit our attempts at patient build up play.

Accrington Ams 'B' (a)   1 - 4 (ht.1-1)

scorers : B.Ssebatta

A poor showing this week, after holding the league leaders last week, we put in a real lack lustre performance this time out and although we took the lead thru Ben's well taken penalty we were never convincing in any area, although we did hold them comfortably despite surrendering possession regularly. The major turning point was when they equalised just before half time, this spurred them on and they dominated us in the 2nd period exposing our frailties with 3 further goals, none of which gave our defensive efforts any credit. We did manage a couple of late flurries but they amounted to nothing, as did our points tally from the match.

O.Mancunians 'A' (h)  3 - 3  (ht.2-2)

scorers : C.Harrison, R.Pomfret, C.Bradshaw

What a start to the new year ! Playing the league leaders we were faster off the mark and slightly dominated the first half. We turned this advantage into a healthy lead when Harrison received a pass inside the 6 yard box which he managed to control, turn and fire into the corner to give us a lead. This lead was doubled in the 35th min when Rob Pom fired in a cross-shot which eluded their keeper and sailed into the top corner. However they pulled a goal back from a scramble following a corner then from the kick-off we lost the ball and they punted the ball forward and it flew over everyone into the net for the unexpected equaliser, 2 goals conceded in less than a minute. The pattern of the 2nd half was similar but it all changed when they were awarded an certain penalty which was converted. With all our subs now on we continued to more than match them in all departments and sub Bradshaw beautifully headed us level after an hour. There was one final twist as an injury to a midfielder meant we had to play the last 25mins with only 10 men. This we did and it was not obvious we were a man down, credit to all our players for gaining a fine point in difficult circumstances.

Lymm 'A' (a)   4 - 2  (ht.2-2)

scorers : T.Lafferty, K.Harford, S.Rawsthorn, B.Ssebatta

In the end a convincing win, but it started so differently. In the first 10 mins our defensive dithering allowed allowed them to score 2 goals, one along range effort after a failed clearance, the other a penalty after the blameless Simon up-ended their striker who was sent clear by our defence. We started to organise and impose ourselves and after 30 mins a Doug Low corner was missed at the near post and Lafferty smashed in the loose ball from around the penalty spot. Five minutes before half-time a long thru ball created havoc along their back line and our forwards pounced on the mistake to create an opportunity that Karl slotted home with a composed finish for the equaliser. Into the second half and we gained a stronger foothold in the game however it wasn't until the 70th minute that a good move down the right saw the ball cut back for Simon to control and place into the corner to give us the lead. In the 80th min we secured the win when Simon was put thru only to be brought down and give us a penalty that Ben dispatched confidently and so we took the hard earned points.

Radcliffe Town 'A' (h)   2 - 3 (ht.1-1)

scorers : G. Halse 2

We dominated the first half but were only 1-0 up, from a cleanly struck shot by Gav, when they undeservedly equalised deep into stoppage time. The 2nd half was slightly more even but none the less they only caused us odd problems on breakaways and we continued to have the lions share of territory and possession. However they took the lead during one of their brief counter attacks. We battled back and Gav scored his second when he swivelled and placed a neat shot into the corner out of the keepers reach with 20mins left. We pressed hard for the winner but missed a few opportunities and didn't make the most of several good openings and were once again undone when at a rare corner their centre half shook off his marker to plant a firm header past Will giving him no chance. Again we threw bodies forward but again failed to get the goal and were left disappointed, frustrated and pointless at the end.

Rochdale St Clems 'B' (h)   3 - 5 (ht.1-1)

scorers : S.Rawsthorn, M.Bowerman 2

A bad defeat albeit against top of the league Rochdale. They started slicker than us and took an early lead, we fought back and got on level terms after 30 mins through a good bit of opportunism from Rawsthorn. 1-1 at ht but then changes were required in the heart of defence, due to injury, and we again started the half slowly conceding a goal immediately then after a defensive mix-up we found ourselves 1-3 down with only 5 mins played in the 2nd half. They scored another before sub Mike blasted in a thunderbolt from outside the box then minutes later pounced on an uncleared corner to fire home and give us a lifeline at 3-4. We dominated for a spell but they hit us again on the counter before Simon missed a penalty (saved) in the last 5 mins and they hung on to win.

Mostonians 'A' (h)   1 - 0 (ht.0-0)

scorers : T.Lafferty

After 2 weekends of cancelled fixtures, we finally started a game in November. In a tight 1st half Broughton claimed most of the possession and both teams created a few chances but were unable to break the deadlock. In the second period, we continued to dominate the game although both teams missed a number of good chances, we hit the post twice through Rawsthorn and McHugh. Whilst at the other end Hurst thwarted Moston on a number of occasions. Finally after about 75 mins, we took the lead. Within minutes of taking the field, Trev applied the necessary touch at point-blank range, after a fine run and pull-back from the bye-line by Rawsthorn. We held on for the win, as they became more direct and applied some late pressure, to record a fine win and only our 2nd clean sheet of the season.

Thornleigh 'B' (h)   3 - 2 (ht.2-0)

scorers : R.Grundy, R.Swan, G.Halse

Normal service resumed, we recorded our first win of a wretched October. Starting with the same starting XI that were cruelly beaten last time out, we took the lead early on, Rich Grundy finishing off a slick passing move by drilling home from 18 yards for his 1st of the season. One soon became two, Swan netting from close range after a cross from Rawsthorn was flicked on at the near post by Low. 2 - 0 at the break quickly became 3 early in the second half, Halse latching onto a through ball from Swan to break their offside trap, sprint half the length of the pitch to round the keeper and score. We missed a number of opportunities to increase our dominance and it nearly came back to haunt us. Thornleigh pulled one back, and then were awarded a dubious penalty, which was converted to reduce our lead to a single goal. This made for an uncomfortable last 15 mins, but we were able to repel the visitors and hang on to a deserved victory.

O.Boltonians 'B' (a)   0 - 1  (ht.0-0)

scorers : -

In a great game we played undoubtedly the best football of our season so far. Totally dominating possession and forcing our opponents to defend deep almost through the entire match. However we created too few goal scoring opportunities for all our possession and territorial advantage. They on the other hand had a couple of breakaway one-on-ones with Simon, who brilliantly saved both, one in each half. It seemed just a matter of time before we eventually unlocked their pressurized defence. They had not had us under any pressure at any time in the match but in the cruelest twist of all they snatched the winner in the 92nd minute the opportunity presented itself to them when a defensive mix-up allowed their forward to break away. We can only take credit for our performance up to the last third when we showed too little invention to crack their blanket defence. Playing like this we'll continue to win most weeks.

Accrington Ams 'B' (h)   2 - 3 (ht.2-3)

scorers : S.Rawsthorn, J.McHugh

It looks like we won't be emulating Arsenal and going the entire season unbeaten... For the second game running, we started brightly and took the lead, Simon adding to his increasing goal tally for the season. Accrington hit back with 2 goals of their own, only for Jim to equalise, his cross from the left leaving the keeper stranded as it dropped in at the far post for his 1st goal of the season. The visitors took the lead again, the unfortunate Ian Winn scoring an OG attempting to clear a goalbound effort. Two substitutions at half time shored up the midfield and defence, and the second half passed without any more goals, both teams missing chances to add to their total, Accrington held on to their lead to become the 1st team to beat us this season.

Old Mancunians 'A' (a)   2 - 2  (ht.2-1)

scorers : S.Rawsthorn 2

Well, the 100% record has gone but we're still unbeaten, and all in all it was a creditable result against another unbeaten team. Unusually for us, we started the brighter of the two teams and took the lead early on, Simon following up after Jim's shot had cruelly bobbled off their 'keepers chest. Rawsthorn doubled his tally soon after, finishing from an acute angle following Smithy's throw from the left. This seemed to spur Mancs in to life, they made an early substitution and piled on the pressure, pulling a goal back before half time. Doug made 2 subs of his own at half-time to counteract the increased threat from the Mancs. We were much more organised in midfield, offering more protection to the back 4, and counterattacking frequently. Unfortunately we weren't able to add to our lead and Mancs equalised. Overall we should see this as a point gained, in a tough match, rather than 2 dropped.

5 wins out of 5 and through to the 3rd round of the cup, the 'A's continue their 100% start to the season. Like most of last seasons cup run we met a team from the division above us and came out on top. After a sloppy start, the visitors took the lead from a corner, but this just served to fire us up and we were soon level, Ian Winn's cross hitting the cross bar and Rawsthorn was on hand to turn in the rebound. Not long after we took the lead, Doug Low volleying sweetly from the edge of the box following Swan's knockdown. Broughton pulled out a 2 goal lead in the 2nd half, Rawsthorne finishing after Low had beaten the keeper to Swan's through ball. Only for Accrington to claw back another goal. Tom Strangeway, deputising for Hursty pulled off a number of saves to keep our lead intact. An inspired substitution from Doug saw Trevor Lafferty take to the field, almost immediately receive the ball, beat two men and crack a beauty past the keeper to score (the eventual winning goal) all within a minute of joining the fray. The away team pulled another goal back to make for a tense finish, but the 3rds held on.

REMEMBER THIS DAY SATURDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER 2005:
Hurriccane Rita hits Texas AND RICHARD SWAN SCORED - TO END A 21 YEAR (felt like!) MONTH GOAL DROUGHT.  We were looking for a 4th straight win against Lymm in our 1st home game. After a quiet start Lymm took a surprise lead on the 20 minute mark from a free kick. This woke us up and within a minute we were level when Rawsthorn broke clear and slotted home. A minute later it was 2-1 with Swanny flicking a cross on for Rawsthorn to volley his 2nd from close range. Now in control it happened - after a fine passing movement from the team, Swanny ran on to a sublime through ball and drilled a left foot shot into the bottom corner, a fine goal and a neat finish to end the drought at last - well done SWANNY! The 2nd half started like the 1st and Lymm pulled another back again due to a defensive error. However 3-2 soon become 4-2 with Gavin getting his 1st with a well placed shot from distance. A penalty for handball enabled Rawsthorn to grab his hat-trick. Gavin helped himself to 2 more, both fine finishes, to complete his hat-trick and there was still time for Mark Shirley to miss a glorious chance late on as he departs to work abroad for 4 months ("start of a 4 month goal drought?" - Swanny). Keep watching the website Mark and good luck.

Rochdale St. Clems 'B' (a)  4 - 3 (ht.3-1)

scorers : Low, Rawsthorn (2), Major

The A's extend their unbeaten start, after a hard fought win at Rochdale. With most of last weeks absentees returned to the squad, the team had a more familiar look to it. Rochdale opened the scoring with a well taken free kick beyond Simons reach in the top corner. Broughton hit back with 3 goals before half time, Doug Low scoring his first for the club after good work from Adam, and Rawsthorn taking his tally to 3 in 3, making the most of a fortunate ricochet for his 1st and beating an advancing keeper for his 2nd. Into the 2nd half, we were forced to replace Chalkie due to injury and they piled on the pressure, eventually reducing the deficit, only for Johnny Major to notch from 2 inches out. He was bragging it was 4 by Sunday night after a lot of drink, at least we think he was talking about his goal? It was his 1st goal since Nov 2003 (". . . and nobody takes the mick out of HIS goal drought!"-Swanny). Rochdale pulled another goal back to make for a tense finish, but Broughton held on to take all the points

Horwich RMI 'A' (a) 2 - 0  AET. (FT.0-0) Cup Rd 1

scorers : D.Birch, R.Pomfret

NB: All 4 teams won today With only 6 players who featured in the match last week, this was going to be a tester and so it proved. We created chances in the first half but poor finishing and a resolute keeper resulted in the teams going in at 0-0 at half time. The same can be said for the 2nd period, with the only hi-light going to Horwich RMI. They were awarded a penalty with about 10 mins to go, following a late but necessary challenge by Chalky ‘White’. Fortunately, their striker fired wide of the left hand upright and the game went into extra time. Shortly after the 1st period of extra time had begun, a great cross by Steve Fenton saw a looping header by manager Dougie Birch for Broughton’s 1st goal. In the final period of extra time, 'Pomey' picked up the ball out on the right wing, drove towards goal and once inside the 18 yard box, fired home Broughton’s 2nd goal. A hard earned victory taking us into the 2nd round.

Radcliffe Town 'A' (a)  4 - 1  (ht.2-0)

scorers : Duffy 3, Rawsthorn

A great opening day victory away to Radcliffe played in sweltering conditions, saw no change in the confidence of the Broughton team from last season. The first 20 minutes saw Radcliffe create more openings but their failure to capitalise was their downfall and on 25 mins Duffy raced through to lash in the opener. A 2nd soon followed with Duffy again calmly slotting home and we were now in firm control with many chances going a miss. At the turn a 2-0 lead was quickly made 3-0 and a hat-trick for Duffy continuing his form of last year. After a good spell of pressure Radcliffe pulled one back, but that was just a consolation.  With 15 mins to play a fourth was added in some style a great pass from Steve Fenton over the top of the last defender to the left of the box saw Simon Rawsthorn score a screaming left foot volley into the far top corner 'an early contender for goal of the season'.  There was still time for Swanny to score only to see it wiped out for an alleged push.

What a game and what a performance. The goals were thick and fast and to be perfectly honest I can't remember in which order they went in. Grant had 2 great penalties (only 1 counted ). Des and Chris played well off each other getting 3 each. Keeno scored to the delight of the watching spectator(s). The main reason we recorded this win was we were first to everything. We also gave the other team no time on the ball, closing them down as soon they had possession. And finally we released the ball faster than we have in the past which meant they could not get the ball off us.

A week of rain meant it was called off at home. So with not many players available we headed to Bury. A change in defence and midfield meant it was going to be hard to maintain the consistency of the last few games. It did not matter 4-0 at half time with goals from Darren, Charlie and Des. It was the best half of football played by the side all season. Solid at the back and playing the ball from man to man with no more than 3 touches meant the opposition must have had only 40% of the ball. Second half after telling the boys at the back this could be our first clean sheet of the season we conceded after 1 min!!. But panic stations are a thing of the past now and we went on to win 7-2. Darren had his best game for us and this week proved what he can do when he is committed. A special thanx to the three boys who stepped in at short notice, and Seddy also got on the score sheet. 4 out of 4 now and a big headache for the manager this week with at least 5 players back.

After eventually finding the ground, we began the game and conceded a soft goal after 1 min. This is normally panic stations! not any more we took the game to the opponents and scored with a goal from Des. Then Chris chipped in with yet another goal from him to make it 2-1. After half time we scored within 5 mins with a good goal from dazza. An own goal made it 4-1 but a mix up at the back and the opponents made it 4-2. Then as rare as rocking horse s**t Bully made it 5-2 with a flick into the bottom corner. Another win and a semi final to look forward to in April.

With a squad of 18 the managers first job was to pick the best side and sadly let a few down. The lads were understanding and every one of them still came to support the side. This is our last chance to salvage something this season and against a side a division above us. Ten minutes after kick off and against the run of play we conceded the first goal. This is a major factor in most of our games, but the response was fantastic. Charlie took the ball from our half, then beat 3 players to slot home a class goal. 10 mins before the break we conceded a second goal. By this point we had lost the left back with a bad cut which required 12 stitches. The reserve left back also injured himself and had to come off at half time. After the break we got our second goal from Cooky a great finish. We began to believe again and we were rewarded with 2 great finishes from man of the match Chris Bradshaw. A victory against a team doing well in the division above us is down to a fantastic team contribution. Bring on the next round.

Trying to build on a good defensive display against top of the table was the main objective against the bottom of the table. A bad start though saw us go 2 down after 10 mins. The response was fantastic!! The boys really began to compete with the opposition and we got what we deserved with 2 quick goals one from Chris and one from Grant. Just before half time Chris grabbed his second. From 2-0 down we were leading 3-2. Second half we were determined to get a result and we scored our fourth after 10 mins Grant with his second. The opposition to their credit never gave up and scored another to make it 4-3 but we finished them off with a third for Chris. A good performance and a much needed but deserved win!!

Another good turn out in numbers ensuring competition for places. The main objective of the game was to minimise goals scored against we're a team lacking confidence after a few heavy defeats. Two goals down after 15 mins, both were dubious decisions by the ref. At this point I thought that we would fold, but this was not to be. the boys started believing in themselves and really took the game to the opposition. Against the run of play GSOB scored 2 mins before half time. The second half was undoubtedly the best performance under new management. All team members gave 100% and kept the 2nd half down to 1 goal conceded. Particular good performances by Armer, Bully, Keeno, but everyone gave a good account of themselves. Against top of the table and with morale low this 2nd half performance is a step in the right direction.

Hesketh Casuals 'B' (h)   4 - 6 (ht.3-1)

scorers : D.Sanders 2, D.Kirwan, Andy

This game was an example of how well and how badly we can play. In the first half we played Hesketh off the park fashioning numerous chances before Darren Sanders gave us the lead. We then made it 2-0 through Darren again. It was soon 3-0 when Andy scored in his first game for us. We bossed the game and the three at the back for us made sure that the opposition rarely had a chance on goal. Slack marking cost us just before half time when they pulled one back off a corner. But at half time the score was 3-1 and we were looking comfortable. The second half was dire. It was a completely different team for us after half time and Hesketh quickly pulled another back and soon after we were pegged back level. They took the lead through an own goal and another poor marking display. By this time a few of our players gave up. Heads were down and some didn't look like they could be bothered. This showed when Hesketh increased their lead to 6-3 before Dan Kirwan pulled another back for us. The final score was 6-4 to Hesketh and this performance was completely unacceptable in the second half.

After a few weeks break we started slowly and were quickly two nil down. We were creating a lot of chances but failed to score, we definitely had the better of the play in the last twenty minutes of the half. In the second half Mostonians scored first to take a three goal lead - against the run of play. We soon threatened and finally got a goal albeit through a Mostonian defender. This spurred us to then pull it back to three two through Charlie Cornwell before Darren Sanders finished off the storming comeback with a lob. We had chances to finish the game off but couldn't capitalise on our eventual domination

A weak start from the team saw us go three down very quickly in this game but we rallied and managed to pull a couple back through Dan Kirwan and Darren Sanders. We went in losing at half time. The second half was much of the same with Ray Tilly scoring from a header but again we conceeded three and ended up losing the game 6-3.

We were awful this week. There was no cohesion in the team, and we gave up in the first half. We were 1-0 down after 5 minutes but took the lead through goals from Dan Kirwan and Ray Tilly. After that it was downhill all the way and we proceeded to lose 6-2. A very bad performance and one we need to rectify in the next game.

We needed to get back to winning ways quickly before we hit a major slump and the lads didn't disappoint this week. We took an early lead through Charlie and were much the better side in the first half. They scored a lucky equaliser towards the end of the first half but almost straight from the resulting kick off Charlie scored again after some great play by Ray. In the second half we really took control and were playing some great football. Dan Kirwan got the third goal deservedly after a great performance. Charlie creating the goal with a fine cross from the left. We made it 4-1 shortly afterwards, Chris McCrudden holding up the ball brilliantly before turning and shooting on the edge of the box. A fine solo effort. Being 4-1 ahead led to us being a little too over confident and Spotland pulled within reach after a disputed penalty and a defensive error to make it 4-3 but this was the kick we needed and Darren Sanders made it 5-3 right at the end of the game. A fantastic performance but we need to stop conceding so many goals.

Old Mancunians 'B' (a)  0 - 2 (ht.0-1)

scorers : -

A dire performance from the lads today saw us go away from Manchester empty handed and without really fashioning any chances to score. We started off quite well but we never pushed ourselves in the final third against a reasonably good passing side. Our boys looked tired and the opposition capitalised by taking the lead and keeping our strikers quiet for the majority of the game. It may have been different if we had scored a dubious penalty that was awarded but their keeper made a great save. Tom, our keeper, made a fantastic save towards the end of the first half to keep the score at one nil at the break. The second half saw more of the same really with us trying to get a goal but never really troubling their keeper. They got a second goal and from there the game was effectively over with Mancunians defending their lead. Although we do feel aggrieved with the second goal as their injured striker miraculously got up, ran on and scored after writhing around in pain. But we simply didn't play well enough on the day.

Bury Ams 'A' (h)   3 - 5 (ht.3-2)

scorers : C.Cornwell 3

The game started off well with us going one nil up in the first minute. Charlie knocking the ball home after great work from the midfield. Charlie scored again after 10 minutes to take us two nil up. A slip up at the back then cost us a goal but we were still in control of the game. We put the lead back up to two later on in the half, Charlie completing his hat-trick with a well taken finish but again they pulled one back late in the half. HT 3-2. The half time break gave the opposition the chance to regroup as we had been in control of the game and they equalised early on in the second half. Although we had chances we couldn't get back to grips with the game and an unfortunate deflection off a cross led to Bury taking the lad for the first time in the game. Their final goal was also unlucky our otherwise great keeper let the ball sip through his hands. It was a bad end to a game for Richard in that he had saved numerous one-on-ones earlier in the game to keep us in it. This game was the end of our unbeaten run but we'll be hoping to get back to winning ways next Saturday.

NB: All 4 teams won today We wanted to continue with our win from last week by having a good performance in the cup and the lads didn't disappoint. We started off brightly with a lot of possession and chances and took the lead early on through Darren. Although we had other chances we couldn't add to the lead. The second half was much the same. We piled on the pressure and were lucky to get a penalty for handball which Grant converted on the rebound after the keeper had saved the initial penalty. A lack of concentration led to Chaddertonians pulling one back but in the end we were too strong and Chris got us a third goal.

A game that we won more comfortably than the score suggests. Both teams started brightly and chances were created and missed at both ends before we scored on the half hour mark with a simply taken finish by Cornwell after a good team passing move. The second half was again fairly even till we sealed the game (we thought!) with 2 quick goals one opportunist strike by Cornwell and a Grant blockbuster from 25 yards. We wobbled in the last 10 mins when they scored 2 goals and had a penalty saved by Steve Accy to give us the 3 points and the victory that our first 80 mins deserved.

Broughton Players play for League Team
Dan Spensley
& Mick Jones
were picked in the Redrow Lancashire Amateur League squad
who played the I Zingari League on Weds 2nd November at Bamber Bridge FC
The Result was 0 - 1 and here's a brief report . . .

As the leagues in Liverpool are being reorganised the representative match between The Redrow Lancashire Amateur League and The I Zingari League on Wednesday 2nd Nov 2005 was the last. A sad occasion as the first fixture dates back to 1919.
Mick Jones was in the starting eleven and played a major part in the first half dominance by the LAL team. He was unlucky not to score after a great turn and shot was saved at the foot of the post by the I Zingari goalkeeper. For all their dominance the LAL team could not score missing all the chances that came their way. The major part of the second half belonged to the I Zingari league who went ahead through a goalkeeping error. Mick Jones, much to the disgust of Broughtons Barmy Army, was then sustituted. Although the LAL team pressed hard and even with the introduction of Danny Spensley in the midfield for the last ten minutes they could not get an equaliser. The next match is again at Bamber Bridge on the 23rd November when we hope that our players will again figure.
