A good pre-season gave us hope that we would get off to a winning start - for once – and within 30 seconds of the start we almost took the lead as Crossthwaite burst down the left side and his wicked low cross was just touched by the keeper to deny Mathias a tap in. We continued to look solid in midfield and dangerous down the flanks, really until an unfortunate injury to Monks required a re-shuffle. With no other recognised centreback, Kev Cummins had to switch to fill in and this seemed to have a significantly negative effect on our overall play. We continued to look solid at the back with Ryan and Tannock doing good work, but we stopped creating and the balance of play swung. 0-0 at the break was a fair reflection of the game, but Marsh started the game at a much higher tempo and through the second half, once they'd scored, they seemed to get stronger as we started to look tired. Defensively we continued to look solid but with so much pressure being applied and runners coming from all angles it was inevitable that Marsh would add to the tally and the second goal came 10 mins from the end. A number of formations and personnel changes were made but the only one to have any real effect was to put Cummins back into midfield for the last 15 minutes. In retrospect its probably what I should have done anyway - but that’s one of a number of lessons learnt today. db

New Longton Rovers  (a)  0 - 1  (ht.0-1)
The overall pattern of the game was much the same as last week- defensively we look sound but we struggle to convert possession into sustained pressure and chances. Today's woes were compounded by a rash of injuries. Already missing Rossi and Micklethwaite from midfield, Kev Cummins sustained a groin problem and had to leave after 20 Minutes. Josh Handley followed 5 minutes later and whole sale changes were forced on us. Truth be told we had been very much behind the pace of the game and New Longtons lively forwards found space where there should have been none as we were collectively slow to mark and pick up runners. Luckily Handley and Ryan in central defence repelled almost all attacks and Vaughan in goal was equally assured as we battled our way through the half. New Longton did take the lead as a midfield guy for once was allowed to move unchallenged into the box, but for most of the game we had little direct threat to our goal despite being unable to retain the ball once won back. In the second half Dan Edwards did start to exert some influence in our midfield, but a further injury to Jaydn King left us with only 10 men, having already used both subs, and we went back onto the defensive. We did threaten more in the last 15 minutes than in the previous 75. Finney dropped deep and started to exert some influence and midfield runners started to commit forward, but too little and too late. db

Following the debacle of 2 weeks ago a new look team took to the field – 4g actually. Player manager Pete Monks took over in charge to refresh the pre match organisation and new signings Dan Jones, Kian Helm Nathen Russell and Ben Ryan all made debuts and all made a significant difference to our play. We started slowly however as we tried to work out how everybody would slot into the team and for the first 30 minutes the game was an end to end shoot out. New Longton looked the more dangerous for a good part of that time and we had to rely of brilliant saves from Will Vaughan to keep us in the game. Pick of the saves was a full length stop from a penalty - his 4th penalty save in a row. Slowly however we started to exert more concerted pressure as Monks and Cummins in midfield started to link with the darting runs of Dan Jones. Finney also started to find his feet in the game and the Finney / Jones combination then looked dangerous all game. We took the lead 5 mins before the break as a Dan Edwards broke down the left and found Jones in the box – and he slotted home. Managerial re-organisation at half time succeeded in making us look defensively more secure whilst losing none of our attacking flair - and the second half was a romp. The second came when Finney released Jones to a one on one with the keeper and 5 minutes later repeated the trick to bisect the defence – this time Kian Helm profited with a cool finish. Mathias got in on the act, firstly to find Edwards unmarked at the far post and then by beating a couple of players to grab our fifth The final goal came as Edwards won a tackle in midfield then burst clear of the defence and his unselfish sideways pass was well finished by Helm. Happier days hopefully beckon. DB

Myerscough  (h)  2 - 1  (ht.2-0)
scorers :  A. Best (2)
We started the league season at home to Myerscough whom we had recently played in a pre season friendly and got beat 7 nil after a terrible performance. Determined to start the season well, and with a much stronger side, we started the game well with some very good football played with much more intensity. The much missed Besty back up top to help out Imi Vohra in attack and another top display from Ryan Foy in the middle of the park (the man never stops running). We took a 1-nil lead after some great play and a lovely finish from Best. We continued to dominate the ball and when Myerscough did create some space the excellent Matt Owen in net was excellent and snuffing out any danger. We extended our lead thru the penalty spot as Besty smashed home to make it 2 nil giving the keeper no chance. The 2nd half was more of the same we just didn’t take our chances when we should have and Myerscough found themselves back in the game with a penalty of their own, which Matt Owen superbly saved but not 1 Broughton player reacted and their man hit it in the net - something we have to learn from. This then gave Myerscough the kickstart they needed and they then took control of the game but unlike some games last season we fought hard for the win and deservedly took the points. A great start to season lots to work on still but good way to start. JA

Astley Reserves  (a)  5 - 5 (ht.2-3)
scorers :  A. Best (5)
Everything about this game reflected night matches. Late arrivals, poor warm ups, rough pitch and erratic referee meant that the standard started low and never improved – with the exception of Best as the one true purveyor of any form of quality. The scene was set when after 30 seconds a long Astley punt was half met by Ryan. The ball looped in the air and as our defender and keeper met face to face on the edge of the box, the resultant header trickled into our own net 10 minutes later Astleys lively right wing was set free and he proceeded without any real challenge to make it 2-0. It was actually a game long shoot out between Best and the opposition winger and Best's first strike came after 25 mins when a free kick was swept imperiously into the bottom corner from 25 yards. Much talk about getting a grip but infact we conceded another goal in carbon copy form - too much space allowed in midfield, long ball to winger, too much pace - goal! Just before half time Vohra got upended and Best converted to make it 3-2. To be fair we improved a bit after the half but contrived to go another goal down in a tiresomely familiar way - the winger again leaving 2 defenders on the ground and finished well. Cometh the hour and Best improved his tally to 4 with another free kick and then a superb 30 yard strike from open play. At 4-4 we should have pushed on but again contrived to go a goal down again just before the final whistle. Well actually just before the first final whistle because this game had 2 final whistles. With just 80 minutes played the ref blew up - much to the puzzlement and then consternation of the touchline. Astley looked to march off, but Kenyon (manager) looked to march ON. Kenyon, having established that there was no good reason for the ref to stop the game early (still nobody knows why) the game was restarted for an extra 8 minutes. In actual fact it only went for an extra 5 mins but in that time Best burst free of the defence to finish with style and at 5-5 that seemed a fitting place to stop. db

Second game in a row against the Allstars after sharing the points last week in a tight game which could’ve gone either way and after finally sorting out a team which was missing at least 5 key players, including the keeper, thru injury or hols, (big shout out to Gav Gregory who went in nets). We started this game very poorly indeed and were way way short of quality. Even with the poor start we should have scored when Melling put scoring chances on a plate for various players but the finishing was awful. Allstars were quicker on the attack with their pacy right winger and we got sucker punched time and again with too many gaps in the midfield full backs getting over run and we found ourselves 4 nil down at half time. After an excellent rallying speech from Melling at halftime we started the 2nd half with much more belief and grit. We reduced the deficit to to 4-3 with goals from Melling (2) and a goal from Joe Smith on his debut. But we couldn’t keep the pressure up and Allstars broke free on a counter attack and scored again - twice. We scored another good goal with a great header from Kenyon but alas it ended 6-4. A missed opportunity really for the 3 points. We can’t start games like that even though we take the positives of the 2nd half we must learn from the 1st half performance. JA
